ACM Award Predictions From a Guy Who Doesn't Listen to Country Music

I don't listen to country music, but that's not going to stop me from making my second annual predictions for the CMA's...I mean ACM's.

Last April I titled this blog post CMA Predictions From a Guy who Doesn't Listen to Country Music. In reality, the awards show I actually tried to predict was the ACM's. See, I didn't realize that country music had competing awards shows. The CMA's are held in November in Nashville on ABC, while the ACM's are held in April in Las Vegas and broadcast on CBS. It's a kind of an NFL/AFL, WWF/NWA, Angelina/Jennifer kind of thing.

In any event, this Sunday we are guaranteed to see the largest collection of goatees, pick-up trucks, cowboy hats, spit cups, wardrobe changes, and guys who have fucked Lorrie Morgan that the world has ever seen! Now let's get on to some predictions.

Entertainer of the Year

Jason Aldean – This guy was said to exhibit his "hip-hop influence" by rapping on his single Dirt Road Anthem, which was really just Gin and Juice for white people.

Toby Keith – The Dixie Chicks were right. They may be banned from country music forever, but they were right...even the cross-eyed one.

Miranda Lambert – Her single Only Prettier should have been titled Only Skinnier.

Brad Paisley – He would be slightly cooler if he would have chosen Art Garfunkel, Jr. as his stage name instead of "Brad Paisley."

Taylor Swift – In her song Innocent, which was directed at Kanye West, Taylor Swift wrote "Everyone of us has messed up too...I hope you remember today is never to late to be brand new." Yeah, that bitch is pretty fucking tough when Kanye West is 3000 miles away. I sure didn't see her getting all preachy when he jumped up on her stage at the Grammy's.

Keith Urban – Keith Urban is taking advantage of the ACM's being held in Las Vegas in order to cheat on Nicole Kidman with a high priced prostitute and go on a cocaine bender...again. Sadly, she was better off with Scientology.

And the winner is.....It's gotta be Jason Aldean, right? I mean, the last time I got suckered into going to the redneck bar all they did was play a mix of country and hip-hop. I also almost got thrown out by the manager for trying to stand up for an African-American guy that night, but that's a whole other story. In any event, like it or not, rap and country are slowly merging. That is the next logical step in music, right?

Top Male Vocalist of the Year

Jason Aldean – Alright, I can't quite get over a country singer rapping and proclaiming that he was influenced by hip-hop like he has invented some sort of new genre. Not only was Dirt Road Anthem the worst attempt at rapping that I've ever heard in my life, but he is merely one in a long line of rednecks who have tried to bite the style of the Smoking Armadillos and venture into the realm of "hick-hop." Seriously, somewhere in the South Bronx Afrika Bambaataa sharted himself the first time he heard Jason Aldean.

Brad Paisley – Sadly, after only two years of writing this post, I'm all out of Brad Paisley jokes.

Blake Shelton – Will be performing his new song, She has a Face that I want to log-on. Oh wait, I just made that up, but I think I could turn that into a country music hit the next time I hit Gatlinburg, TN.

Keith Urban – After Nicole Kidman finally gets enough self esteem to break up with Keith Urban, it inspires him to write a new hit song, Now I'm Singin' a Blue Song, But Livin' in a Red State. (See, I made that up too. This is too easy...I'm moving to Nashville!).

George Strait – I'm glad to see that George Straight has finally listened to the people and released the long awaited sequel to his movie Pure Country. Do I smell a Golden Globe in addition to a CMA (I mean ACM)? Seriously, if this movie doesn't go straight to video, go to your local movie theater on it's release day and look to see how many F-150's are in the parking lot with plastic nut-sacks tied around their trailer hitches. Bonus points if you take pictures of the p-whipped boys wearing cowboy hats as they walk out of the theater.

And the winner is…..Afrika Bambaataa!

Top Female Vocalist of the Year

Miranda Lambert – Is she pregnant? First Natalie Portman, now Miranda Lambert.

Reba McEntire – I find it hard to believe that she was nominated given that she hasn't put out an album since she collaborated with Huey Lewis on Sports in 1983.

Taylor Swift - Seriously, I'd love to see the look on Joe Jonas' face if he ran into Kanye West with his girlfriend Taylor Swift at an after party or on the town. As a boyfriend he's kind of obligated to stand up for her and all, but Kanye did kill his own mom...just sayin'.

Carrie Underwood – Carrie Underwood has dated Tony Romo, a Gossip Girl (sadly, it was one of the Gossip Guys), and a pro hockey player. Ladies and gentlemen, I introduce to you the new Alyssa Milano! Sadly, Carrie has the better Hollywood resume given that her stint on American Idol trumps anything that Milano has ever done in her career.

Lee Ann Womack – This girl needs to stop stealing husbands and start taking better acting rolls...Wait, that's Leann Rimes. Who the fuck is Lee Ann Womack again?

And the winner is.....Carrie Underwood! After all, she is the Janet Jones of the south now that she forced a star hockey player to get traded to Nashville much to the chagrin of all of Canada.

Top Vocal Group of the Year

Little Big Town – The love child of Jason Aldean's singles Hicktown and Big Green Tractor.

Zac Brown Band – Seriously, the ACM's are reaching. Just because they are from the south it doesn't mean these guys are country, are they?

Randy Rogers Band – For real, the highest rated single to date from this band is Tonight's not the Night, which reached #43 on the country charts in 2005. It makes absolutely no sense to invite them to an awards show if they have no chance of winning, right? I mean, it's not like these guys are George Clooney or Angelina Jolie or anything.

The Band Perry – After the Zac Brown and Randy Rogers Bands, these guys are either really smug or just dyslexic.

Lady Antebellum – A group named after the pre-Civil War South...Ahhh, the good ol' days! Somewhere the ghost of Alexander Stephens is humming bars to Dixie in approval of Lady Antebellum while he plots ways to haunt Jason Aldean from his grave.

And the winner is.....I'm not sure, but the smart bet says they'll have the word "band" in their title.

Top Vocal Duo of the Year

the JaneDear girls – If you take Jason Aldean's singles She's Country and Big Green Tractor and add them together, their unholy union would spawn the JaneDear girls. They're now involved in a legal battle for Jason Aldean's royaltees with Little Big Town in the event that he dies at a NASCAR race as a result of a flying tire or an overdose of meth.

Joey + Rory – American Apparel founder and CEO Dov Charney has started a T-shirt campaign to "Legalize Joey + Rory." Joey + Rory subsequently sued him for sexual harassment after he made inappropriate contact with them at a photo shoot.

Steel Magnolia – Apparently this is a group that won a TV show called Can You Duet?, which goes to show that no matter how many people move to Nashville in order to pursue a career in country music, the best way to become a famous country music star is simply by singing karaoke or entering a reality television show.

Sugarland – So a country band from the south re-made the song Life in a Northern Town? I think my northern ass doth protest.

Montgomery Gentry – Once again, a shoe in to win. They have the perfect combination of cliché song titles, cowboy hats, and goatees.

Updated Post Scouting Combine 2011 NFL Mock Draft

Here is my Updated Post Scouting Combine NFL Mock Draft. It will be followed by a Final Mock shortly before the NFL Draft starts on April 28th.

This is not a mock draft where I attempt play general manager and substitute my own judgment for the 32 NFL teams. I do my best to research what particular players or positions each team may be targeting by searching the internet and listening to Sirius NFL Radio for tips from reliable beat writers and NFL insiders in order to provide links and analysis as to why I think a particular player may end up going to the team that I have him slotted to.

1. Carolina Panthers – Cam Newton, QB, Auburn: The Panthers could use help at quarterback, defensive tackle and defensive end. With talented players available at each position, it is up to the Panthers front office to determine which position is the most worthy of the number 1 overall pick. Some reports have indicated that Carolina has narrowed their choices down to Missouri quarterback Blaine Gabbert and Alabama defensive tackle Marcell Dareus, while others say that Auburn quarterback Cam Newton is the only player the Panthers see as being worthy of a franchise quarterback in this year's draft. 2. Denver Broncos – Marcell Dareus, DT, Alabama: Denver had the worst ranked defense in the league last season, and ex-head coach Josh McDaniel and GM Brian Xanders have left this unit nearly devoid of talent. As they transition back to a 4-3 defense, Denver has released defensive tackles Jamal Williams and Justin Bannan, making that position the logical choice with the number 2 selection given that Marcell Dareus and Nick Fairley are two of the draft's top prospects. 3. Buffalo Bills – Von Miller, OLB, Texas A and M: If Marcell Dareus is available at pick number 3 he will draw consideration from the Bills. While Buffalo GM Buddy Nix has acknowledged that the Bills don't necessarily need a quarterback after Ryan Fitzpatrick had a career year under Chan Gailey, he has also indicated that they would not pass on a player if they view him as a franchise quarterback of the future. While Nix and owner Ralph Wilson seem enamored on Cam Newton, he appears to be headed to Carolina. In that scenario, the question becomes whether the Bills view Blaine Gabbert as a franchise quarterback. 4. Cincinnati Bengals – A.J. Green, WR, Georgia: With Carson Palmer threatening to retire if his demand for a trade is not granted, the Bengals suddenly have huge needs on both sides of the ball. They could easily justify using this pick on a franchise quarterback, running back, wide receiver, defensive end, defensive tackle or cornerback. A.J. Green will likely be the highest rated player on the board when the Bengals draft at number 4, and he would ease the loss of soon to be departed wide receivers Chad Johnson and Terrell Owens, especially if the Bengals find better value in addressing the quarterback position in the second round of the draft or through free agency.

5. Arizona Cardinals – Robert Quinn, DE/OLB, North Carolina: Several reports suggest that the Cardinals are not interested in using their first round pick on a quarterback, and that they will instead try to address that position either via a trade or through free agency. Von Miller would be their first choice given that he seems to be more of a natural OLB in a 3-4 scheme, but Robert Quinn of North Carolina should also be able to adapt to that role. 6. Cleveland Browns – Da'Quan Bowers, DE, Clemson: While wide receiver is one area of need, the Browns' more immediate needs are for a defensive end to rush the passer, and a defensive tackle who can plug the middle following Shaun Rogers' release. If Marcell Dareus is around at the sixth pick he would likely be Cleveland's choice, although the Browns would be thrilled if an elite 4-3 pass rush end like Clemson's Da'Quan Bowers fell to them at the 6th spot due to concerns over a minor surgical procedure that he underwent on his knee after his senior season. http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2011/03/clemsons_daquan_bowers_is_clev.html;

7. San Francisco 49ers – Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU: Unless San Francisco can make a play for an established veteran like Kevin Kolb (which they won't be able to do until a new CBA is reached), the 49ers will have to find their long-term answer at quarterback through the draft. While Jim Harbaugh has talked about bringing Alex Smith back for yet another trial of his ability to be an NFL quarterback, the 49ers did not offer him a contract tender, suggesting that all of that rhetoric could have been a smokescreen. Nonetheless, I still look for the 49ers to trade for a veteran quarterback and then draft another one in the early to mid rounds as a developmental project. In that case, San Francisco could go for a lockdown corner like Patrick Peterson to strengthen their aging and porous secondary.

8. Tennessee Titans – Nick Fairley DT, Auburn: While Tennessee is another team with a big void at their quarterback position, the Titans are a veteran team that seems to prefer bringing in a veteran signal caller, either via trade or free agency. 9. Dallas Cowboys – J.J. Watt, DE, Wisconsin: It's sounding more and more like the Cowboys are less interested in Oklahoma cornerback Prince Amukamara, and are more interested in a defensive end like J.J. Watt of Wisconsin or an offensive lineman like Tyron Smith of USC. With Watt ideally suited to play at the 5 technique in a 3-4 defense like the Cowboys run, it seems like he would be a better value with the ninth pick than a right tackle to play opposite of Doug Free. Washington Redskins – Julio Jones, WR, Alabama: While the Redskins desperately need to find a quarterback, there may not be value in drafting a less polished signal caller like Jake Locker or Ryan Mallett in the top ten if Blaine Gabbert and Cam Newton are off the board when they pick. 11. Houston Texans – Prince Amukamara, DE/OLB, Missouri: The Texans would love to land local product Von Miller to provide an edge rush for their new 3-4 defensive scheme, but he'll likely be long gone by the time they pick. The Texans would also love to have the opportunity to choose between Prince Amukamara and Robert Quinn to fill a glaring need at either cornerback or outside linebacker. 12. Minnesota Vikings – Blaine Gabbert, QB, Missouri: Minnesota has holes at DT, DE, S and QB. The only quarterback that the Vikings seem to value highly enough to select in the first round is Blaine Gabbert of Missouri, who could fall to Minnesota if he gets past Carolina and Buffalo. Trading up for Gabbert is also a possibility, as is taking an accurate but lesser armed quarterback like Christian Ponder or Andy Dalton in the second round in the event that Gabbert is not available. Detroit Lions – Tyron Smith, OT, USC: The Lions could be in a difficult position if the top two cornerbacks are off the board, as the number 13 pick will probably be too early value wise to draft a 4-3 outside linebacker in this year's draft. Lions GM Martin Mahew has already established a "draft the best player available" philosophy, so does that mean that we could see the Lions do the unthinkable go after yet another wide receiver in the first round? Afterall, there is an outside chance that Julio Jones could still be available when the Lions pick. If he is, Jones just might be the highest rated player available on their draft board. An athletic receiver like Jones would actually make sense for the Lions given that he could fill the role of a much needed deep threat opposite Calvin Johnson while Nate Burleson fills the slot. 14. St. Louis Rams – Aldon Smith, OLB/DE, Missouri: The Rams need to find a legitimate number one target for quarterback Sam Bradford. Julio Jones would be a no-brainer if he is still available when St. Louis picks, but his performance at the Scouting Combine may have secured him a spot in the top ten picks of the draft. Local product Aldon Smith of Missouri would be a solid choice to improve an aging and inconsistent pass rush at defensive end, while Cameron Jordan of California and Adrian Clayborn of Iowa could also draw consideration. 15. Miami Dolphins – Mark Ingram, Jr., RB, Alabama: The Dolphins are looking to trade down from the number 15 spot and acquire a second round pick, having given theirs up to Denver in the Brandon Marshall trade last year. Even if they move lower in the first round they could still be in the mix for former Heisman Trophy winner Mark Ingram, Jr., who would replace the Dolphins aging and injury prone duo at running back of Ricky Williams and Ronnie Brown. Alternatively, the Dolphins could look for an interior offesnive lineman like Mike Pouncey or Danny Watkins if they can succesfully trade down or out of the first round.

Jacksonville Jaguars - Ryan Kerrigan, DE/OLB, Purdue: While safety and wide receiver are more pressing needs, there will be little value at those positions on the board when Jacksonville picks at number 16. 17. New England Patriots (from Oakland) – Cameron Jordan, DE/OLB, California: New England always seems to be looking for defensive ends and outside linebackers who fit their 3-4 defensive scheme. 18. San Diego Chargers – Adrian Clayborn, DE, Iowa: The Chargers should benefit from a deep defensive line class. They could use either a defensive end or a 3-4 linebacker who can rush the passer. Reports indicate that the Chargers front office is targeting Purdue DE/OLB Ryan Kerrigan, but in this scenario he is off the board. Trading up (possibly with New England) for Kerrigan, J.J. Watt or Cameron Jordan is also a possibility that has been rumored depending on how the the Chargers' board falls into place on draft day.

19. New York Giants – Anthony Castonzo, OT, Boston College: Replenishing an aging offensive line has to be a priority for the Giants, as is adding some new blood at linebacker. Anthony Castonzo of Boston College has the ability to step in immediately at right tackle or even guard, and then ultimately wind up as a book-end left tackle. 20. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Cameron Heyward, DE, Ohio State: While the Bucs have the depth to go for the best player available, getting a rush end via the draft or free agency is probably their biggest off-season priority. Tampa Bay has shown interest in Ryan Kerrigan of Purdue, Aldon Smith of Missouri and Adrian Clayborn of Iowa, all of whom could be off the board by the time they pick at number 20. The question remains as to whether the Bucs would stick to a position of need and select Cameron Heyward of Ohio State, or go in another direction altogether. For now, they hope like hell that a third quarterback gets selected by Washington, Minnesota or Jacksonville in order to push down one of the defensive ends that they seem to covet.

21. 22. Indianapolis Colts – Nate Solder, OT, Colorado: The Colts survived with a very mediocre offensive line for years thanks to Howard Mudd, who may be one of the best position coaches to ever coach in the NFL. When Mudd left before last season, the Colts' line was exposed as a major weakness. It's definitely time for Indianapolis to look for some new talent at the the tackle position in order to protect Peyton Manning and re-establish some sort of running game. Nate Solder of Colorado is probably projected to be the best left tackle over the long run in this year's draft, which would make him an ideal choice for the Colts.

Philadelphia Eagles - Gabe Carimi, OT, Wisconsin: The offensive line for the Eagles has underachieved in recent years, especially based upon the amount of money that they've paid to big name players. Wisconsin tackle Gabe Carimi could start off his NFL career playing right tackle or even guard, which would give the Eagles some depth and versatility. New Orleans Saints – Muhammad Wilkerson, DT, Temple: While the Saints could use help at either defensive end or outside linebacker, there are reports that they are interested in drafting Temple defensive tackle Muhammad Wilkerson. This makes very little sense to me given that the Saints currently have Sedrick Ellis and Shaun Rogers as tandem on the interior of their defensive line, with Anthony Hargrove able to move over from end on pass rushing downs. Seattle Seahawks – Mike Pouncey, C/G, Florida: It is looking more and more like the Seahawks will address their quarterback position via trade (Kevin Kolb/Carson Palmer), free agency (re-signing Matt Hasselbeck) or the later days in the NFL Draft (Christian Ponder/Andy Dalton). 26. Baltimore Ravens – Jimmy Smith, CB, Colorado: Baltimore's defense continued to be one of the top units in the NFL in spite of a lack of talent at cornerback. If Jimmy Smith of Colorado falls in this year's draft as expected due to character concerns, he may be a talent that the Raven's may not be able to pass up. Atlanta Falcons – Justin Houston, OLB/DE, Georgia: While the Falcons lack a wide receiver to compliment and draw coverage away from Roddy White, drafting Torrey Smith of Maryland in the first round is probably too much of a reach. Atlanta is also still searching for a defensive end to compliment John Abraham. Justin Houston of Georgia is a local kid who could fill that need and get to the passer while playing with his hand in the dirt. New England Patriots – Benjamin Ijanala, G/T, Villanova: Even if the Patriots are able to franchise tag guard Logan Mankins pending the terms of a new Collective Bargaining Agreement, don't look for him to stay in New England long term given his rift with their front office this past year over his contract. Benjamin Ijanala of Villanova could help solidify the interior of the Patriots' line at guard, or even play tackle as he did in college in the event that the they cannot re-sign tackle Todd Light.

29. Chicago Bears - Corey Liuget, DT, Illinois: The Bears need help on the interior of their defensive line. While Phil Taylor of Baylor may also be available, local product Corey Liuget from Illinois is a better fit schematically at DT for what the Bears like to run on defense. New York Jets – Phil Taylor, DT, Baylor: Defensive tackle Phil Taylor of Baylor would be a logical choice if the Jets do not plan on resigning nose tackle Kris Jenkins at a discounted price after he was released. The Jets currently lack a strong anchor at nose tackle, one of the key positions in their 3-4 defense. Interestingly, an article written by Eric Allen linking the Jets to Taylor on NewYorkJets.com was recently removed from their official website. Hmmm...

Pittsburgh Steelers – Brandon Harris, CB, Miami: While the Steelers arguably have the best defense in the league, neither William Gay nor Bryant McFadden are ideal starting caliber cornerbacks in the NFL. Brandon Harris ran and performed well in drills at the Scouting Combine, and could be a value pick for Pittsburgh this late in the first round.

32. Green Bay Packers – Brooks Reed, OLB/DE, Arizona: Green Bay won the Super Bowl and will have key players returning from injury last season at tight end, tackle, middle linebacker, outside linebacker, defensive end and running back. Still, an elite pass rusher at the linebacker position like Brooks Reed of Arizona would be an ideal compliment opposite Clay Mathews. Alternatively, the Packers could look for a 3-4 defensive end like Cameron Heyward of Ohio State or Muhammad Wilkerson of Temple if they anticipate Cullen Jenkins leaving via free agency.

Post Scouting Combine 2011 NFL Mock Draft

Here is my Post Scouting Combine NFL Mock Draft. It will be followed by an additional Post Combine Mock Draft, as well as a Final Mock before the NFL Draft begins on April 28th.

This is not a mock draft where I attempt play general manager and substitute my own judgment for the 32 NFL teams. I do my best to research what particular players or positions each team may be targeting by searching the internet and listening to Sirius NFL Radio for tips from reliable beat writers and NFL insiders in order to provide links and analysis as to why I think a particular player may end up going to the team that I have him slotted to.

1. Carolina Panthers – Da'Quan Bowers, DE, Clemson: In spite of his raw potential, there are enough questions about whether Cam Newton worthy of the number 1 overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft after only one year as a starting quarterback in college. With no clear cut quarterback to take with the number 1 pick, the Panthers can look to local product Da'Quan Bowers to form a formidable pass rush opposite Charles Johnson and consider a quarterback like Christian Ponder of Florida State in the second round. http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2011/02/28/2100001/video-a-surprise-no-1-draft-pick.html

2. Denver Broncos – Nick Fairley, DT, Auburn: Denver had the worst ranked defense in the league last season after ex-head coach Josh McDaniel and GM Brian Xanders left this unit nearly devoid of talent. As they transition back to a 4-3 defense Denver has subsequently released defensive tackles Jamal Williams and Justin Bannan, making that position the logical choice for the number 2 selection in the draft given that Marcell Dareus and Nick Fairley are to of the top five projected picks. http://www.denverpost.com/broncos/ci_17531737

3. Buffalo Bills – Marcell Dareus, DT, Alabama: If Marcell Dareus is available at pick number 3 he will draw consideration from the Bills. 4. Cincinnati Bengals – A.J. Green, WR, Georgia: With Carson Palmer threatening to retire if his demand for a trade is not granted the Bengals suddenly have huge needs on both sides of the ball. They could easily justify using this pick on a franchise quarterback, running back, wide receiver, defensive end or a defensive tackle. If the Bengals can appease Palmer, or even if they wait for the second round to address their need at the quarterback position, a wide receiver to ease the loss of the soon to be departed Chad Johnson and Terrell Owens would be a nice start to help rebuild the Bengals offense.

5. Arizona Cardinals – Von Miller, DE/OLB, Texas A&M: Several reports suggest that the Cardinals are not interested in using their first round pick on a quarterback, and that they will instead try to fill their void at that position either via a trade or through free agency. 6. Cleveland Browns – Robert Quinn, DE, North Carolina: While a WR would be nice, the Browns really need a defensive end to rush the passer or a defensive tackle in light of Shaun Rogers having been released. 7. San Francisco 49ers – Patrick Peterson, CB, LSU: Unless San Francisco can make a play for an established veteran like Kevin Kolb (which they won't be able to do until a CBA is reached), the 49ers will have to find their long term answer at quarterback through the draft. While Jim Harbaugh has talked about bringing Alex Smith back for yet another trial of his ability to be an NFL quarterback, the 49ers did not offer him a contract tender, suggesting that all of that rhetoric could have been a smokescreen. Nonetheless, I still like the 49ers to trade for a veteran quarterback and draft an early to mid round player to be his successor. 8. Tennessee Titans – Blaine Gabbert, QB, Missouri: Barring a trade, the Titans absolutely need to find a quarterback of the future in this year's draft. While Cam Newton is getting all the hype, Blaine Gabbert is similar in size and stature. 9. Dallas Cowboys – Prince Amukamara, CB, Nebraska: The Cowboys secondary, amongst other positions, greatly underachieved last season. Terence Newman's days in Dallas appear numbered. 10. Washington Redskins – Cam Newton, QB, Auburn: Rex Grosman clearly is not the answer at quarterback for the 'Skins. 11. 12. Minnesota Vikings – Ryan Mallett, QB, Arkansas: Minnesota has glaring holes at DT, DE, S and QB. 13. Detroit Lions – Nate Solder, OT, Colorado: With the top two corners off the board do the Lions turn their attention to a desperate need for a playmaker at outside linebacker? The Lions could be in a difficult position in this year's draft if the top cornerbacks are off the board, as the number 13 spot may be too early value wise to draft a 3-4 outside linebacker in this draft. Martin Mahew is definitely not a GM who will reach for a player in the draft just because he fills a position of need. Does that mean we could see the Lions do the unthinkable go after yet another WR in the first round? There is not only a reasonable chance that Julio Jones could be available and the highest rated player on the board when the Lions pick, but he would also fill the role of a much needed deep threat opposite Calvin Johnson with Nate Burleson manning the slot. Miami Dolphins – Mark Ingram, Jr., RB, Alabama: The Dolphins are looking to trade down from number 15 and acquire a second round pick, having given theirs up to Denver in the Brandon Marshall trade last year. 17. New England Patriots (from Oakland) – Cameron Jordan, DE/OLB, California: New England always seems to be looking for defensive ends/outside linebackers for their 3-4 defensive scheme. 19. New York Giants – Tyron Smith, OT, USC: Replenishing an aging offensive line has to be a priority for the Giants, as is adding some new blood at linebacker. Indianapolis Colts – Anthony Castanzo, OT, Boston College: The Colts survived with a very mediocre offense line for years thanks to Howard Mudd, who may be one of the best positional coaches ever in the NFL. When Mudd left Indianapolis before last season, the Colts line was exposed as a weakness. Seattle Seahawks – Jake Locker, QB, Washington: With Matt Hasselbeck still unsigned and Charlie Whitehurst yet to cement himself as Seattle's quarterback of the future, the Seahawks have to consider drafting a quarterback with their first round pick. Hometown college star Jake Locker relieved some of the concerns raised about his accuracy at the Scouting Combine, and would come into a good situation where he would not be forced to play right away in Seattle if a short term deal is worked out with Hasselbeck. Interior offensive linemen like Mike Pouncey of Florida and Danny Watkins from Baylor could also draw consideration if free agent guard Robert Gallery doesn't follow Tom Cable to Seattle, who was recently hired as Pete Carroll's new offensive line coach.

30. New York Jets – Rahim Moore, S, UCLA: As good as the Jets defense is on paper, that unit underachieved last season. Pittsburgh Steelers – Brandon Harris, CB, Miami: While the Steelers arguably have the best defense in the league, Neither William Gay nor Bryant McFadden are starting caliber NFL cornerbacks. Brandon Harris ran and performed well in drills at the Scouting Combine, and would be a value pick for Pittsburgh this late in the first round. http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/11062/1129469-139.stm

Green Bay Packers – Cameron Heyward, DE, Ohio State: Green Bay won the Super Bowl and will have key players returning from injury last season at tight end, tackle, middle linebacker, outside linebacker, 3-4 defensive end and running back. Right now it looks as if Cullen Jenkins, an emerging star at defensive end, will leave the Packers as a free agent, and Cameron Heyward of Ohio State projects as a prototype defensive end in the Packers 3-4 defensive scheme who could replace him. http://packersnews.greenbaypressgazette.com/article/20110226/PKR01/110226044/1058/PKR03

2011 Oscar Predictions From a Guy Who Doesn't Watch Movies: The Golden Globes Strike Back

Before I get started on my third annual attempt at predicting the Oscar winners, let's start with some background information. As I state every year, I don’t watch or rent movies anymore.

I pretty much stopped watching movies and DVD's when Hollywood studios began trying to out “special effect” each other in order to overcompensate for bad writing and a lack of original ideas, a/k/a "the George Lucas syndrome."

My formula for predicting the Academy Award winners despite not ever watching movies is simple. I use a combination of word of mouth, watching movie trailers, reading movie posters, and my own personal analysis of how Hollywood works. Am I ready to give this yet another shot? Yo soy!

The most unique trend at the Oscars this year is that, unlike in the past, most of the films that were nominated did relatively well at the box office. Does this mean that the American public is starting to embrace "art-house" films? Or are the Oscars continuing their transition towards becoming The Golden Globes? With the Academy going with younger, hipper co-hosts in Anne Hathaway and James Franco this year in a clear attempt to boost ratings, I think they have pretty much indirectly given us the answer.

Another Oscar anomaly worth mentioning? Not a single African-American was nominated by the Academy for an Oscar this year. I mean seriously, couldn't they have put Will Smith up for a Lifetime Achievement Award or something? I have a feeling that there's going to be some serious elitist guilt going around Sunday night to overcompensate for an entire race of qualified actors being snubbed at this year's "Albino Awards."

My only question is what topic will generate more references from self righteous actors and actresses as they present and accept their awards? The lack of African-American nominees, or the labor unrest involving public sector unions in Wisconsin? In fact, put this up for debate at your own Oscar party and then put some money on it to make the show interesting.

I'm going on a limb and saying that the labor unrest in Wisconsin will generate more mentions, simply because the Hollywood elitist types like to pretend that they have real jobs by joining cute little clubs like "The Fraternal Order of Actors Local #420" just so they can proclaim that they are part of a real "brotherhood" as they sip on their "Fair Trade" soy lattes at some trendy coffee house.

Allright, it's time to get started. Let's rank the top ten films nominated for Best Picture, as well as the five nominees for Best Actor and Best Actress:

Best Picture:

10. The Social Network: This just as easily could have been a made for TV movie on a cable network like USA starring Anthony Michael Hall. It instead became one of the highest grossing box office films of the year and featured a boy band singer trying his hand at acting. Either way, the medium and casting for this film's premise was not quite Oscar worthy.

9. Toy Story 3: Toy Story 3 is the third installment in a series of animated films. So was Stars Wars: Revenge of the Sith. If Revenge of the Sith couldn't win the Oscar for Best Picture, then neither will Toy Story 3.

8. Inception: A smart movie for stupid people probably is not going to garner too much support from the Academy.

7. 127 Hours: If the producers could have combined 127 Hours with Into the Wild and still called it a non-fiction film then they might have been on to something. I can see the trailer now, "Based on a true story...Tom Cruise is In the Wild for 127 Hours!"

6. True Grit: The Coen brothers definitely have their own niche in Hollywood with their interpretations of classic works. Unfortunately they're just a little too witty for the Golden Globes, and not quite original enough for the Oscars.

5. The Fighter: While the Academy loves themselves some boxing movies, The Fighter is a bio-pic about a white-male boxer. That's just a little too Rocky these days to garner any real Oscar consideration. Now, if you took some liberties with history and made "Irish Mickey" a gutsy Indian fighter, and turned this film a Bollywood musical, then we might be able to talk.

4. The Kids Are All Right: Hmmm...A film about two lesbians adopting a child and dealing with the biological father. Despite the fact that the description of this film screams of a sitcom starring Jason Lee, Katherine Heigl and Ellen DeGeneres, It just might have some promise.

3. Winter's Bone: This sounds like a depressing, low budget, low grossing film. This film would have won the Oscar a few years back before the Academy decided to dumb things down for the American public.

2. Black Swan: Not that the plot was in any way slammed by the critics, but this screenplay just seemed like it was written primarily to highlight its characters rather than really tell a story. And yes, I'm still bitter that Natalie Portman got knocked up by Benajmin Millepied, whom she met as a result of making this movie.

1. The King's Speech: As an indictment as to why The Social Network won't win the Oscar for Best Picture, if this was a contemporary film it would have to do with Prince William fighting his male pattern baldness and convincing his girlfriend that she should still marry him before he takes the Thrown. Instead, just like a fine wine or wheel of cheddar cheese, we have an appropriately aged period piece about a historical figure who overcame a disability...Jesus, just give The King's Speech the damn award!

Best Actor:

5. Jesse Eisenberg - The Social Network: If you get overshadowed by a former boy band member in a film, you don't deserve to win an Oscar.

4. Javier Bardem - Biutiful: When you are the second best actor in your family and your wife is Penelope Cruz, you don't deserve to win an Oscar.

3. Jeff Bridges - True Grit: Winning back to back Best Actor Oscars is kind of like winning the Heisman Trophy as an underclassman...If you don't follow it up with an even better season the next year then you simply aren't winning it again. Trying to do so while reprising the role of a legend (John Wayne won his only Best Actor Oscar for his role in True Grit in 1969) is kind of like dunking from the free throw line at the NBA Slam Dunk Contest...If you can pull it off you get high marks, but that alone isn't going to be enough to win since Dr. J was the one who made it famous. (sorry, I just had to work some sports into this blog post somewhere).

2. James Franco - 127 Hours: Even the writers of Castaway realized that Tom Hanks needed to converse with an inanimate volleyball for some comic relief in order to make that movie tolerable. Assuming that James Franco made a movie about a guy with his arm stuck under a rock for 127 hours watchable, then he must have done something right. Kudos to him, but this just doesn't quite feel like the type of movie that would generate an Oscar for Best Actor.

1. Colin Firth - The King's Speech: Period pieces featuring royalty roles have always done well when it comes to the Best Actor Award, as have roles that deal with people overcoming disabilities. Short of Tom Hanks having played a character who was both mentally retarded and homosexual this year, Firth is a mortal lock for the Best Actor Award.

Best Actress:

5. and 4. Nicole Kidman - Rabbit Hole/Michelle Williams - Blue Valentine: So how pissed do you think Katie Holmes is? Not only is her husband's ex-wife up for a Best Actress nomination, but so is Michelle Williams, who clearly played second fiddle to her when they were both on Dawson's Creek. I think it's pretty safe to say that Katie resents her overbearing husband and the whole Scientology "religion" for keeping her out of the 2011 Best Actress mix when they were responsible for forcing her to turn down the lead role in Sex and the City 2.

3. Jennifer Lawrence - Winter's Bone: A relatively unknown actress in a dark film that didn't make much money...NOW we're talking about a serious Oscar contender!

2. Annette Benning - The Kids Are All Right: This is what happens to good looking actresses when they get old. While they can act better than ever, nobody really cares when they are up against a younger and prettier version who had a breakout performance in a tailor made role (and I'm not saying this just to be sexist, the winners of the Best Actress Oscar are traditionally much younger than their male counterparts, so bring it up with the Academy).



Whether it involves shaving her head, losing weight, getting pregnant while shooting, or putting up with George Lucas, nobody can say that Natalie Portman doesn't completely buy into whatever role she's playing.


1. Natalie Portman - Black Swan: Natalie Portman has been an actress in training for this award. Her entire career has been critically acclaimed (sans any mention of Queen Amidala or pairings with the likes of Ashton Kutcher). Not only did she purportedly push the envelope with a dark role in this film, but she "went DeNiro" and completely transformed her body (which was subsequently defiled by fiance Benajmin Millepied) for her role. Most importantly, Portman is a highly educated, well spoken and glowingly pregnant celebrity that the Academy would love to get all of the video and sound bites in which they otherwise dumbed things down a notch in order to get better ratings.
